La Cultura

One of the social highlights in the South Valley this weekend was the wedding reception for Jennifer and Joaquin Holguin, in the banquet room of the Casino at Sunland Park on Saturday night. Mr. Holguin is a mechanic from the Berino-Mesquite area. He married Jennifer Martinez, the daughter of a business family in La Mesa. The wedding and reception were attended by a number of prominent persons in the region, including Gary Esslinger, of the Elephant Butte Irrigation District, businessman Steve Benavidez, Judge (R) Joe Galvan, Rep. Mary Helen Garcia and her sister Emma Jean Cervantes, Magistrate Judge Olivia Nevarez Garcia, and singer Orlando Jimenez. Mr. Eddie Gamboa and his wife Rosemary, who are widely sought after for this task, led the Marcha. Jennifer is the grand daughter of the most famous political leader of the South Valley in modern times, the late Chope Benavides.
